AI innovators to speak at Cornell BrAIn symposium Dec. 9-10

Cornell BrAIn, initiated and led by the College of Arts & Sciences, will host a two-day symposium Dec. 9-10, bringing together innovators in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and neuroscience to explore the connections being forged between neurotechnology, deep learning, natural intelligence and AI.

The symposium will be from 9 a.m. - 5:45 p.m. and is open in-person to the Cornell community in Biotech G10 on the Ithaca campus; the public is invited to join online. Registration is required for all participants at Cornell brAIn Symposium.

“Novel neurotechnologies, including some developed here at Cornell, enable researchers to record thousands of neurons at once,” said event organizer Jesse Goldberg. “These complex brain signal datasets require new analytical tools, and AI researchers are now leading the way in decoding brain signals to gain insight into how thoughts, perceptions and actions are encoded.

“In addition, artificial neural networks trained to move robotic limbs, understand speech, or recognize objects acquire architectures and representations also seen in real brains. It is an exciting time to explore principles of natural and artificial intelligence. With a world-renowned machine learning community and recent growth in systems neuroscience, Cornell is poised to lead in this area,” said Goldberg, associate professor of neurobiology and behavior in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Pre-packaged breakfast, coffee and snacks will be provided to in person attendees. Presentations begin at 9:25 a.m.. A reception with food and refreshments will be held from 4:45pm to 5:45pm.

The symposium is co-sponsored by the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, the Department of Computational Biology, the Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, and the Department of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine.
